recently, i told my brother and sister to not buy xmas gifts for the girls. i realized the drasticness of that statement, and i ammended it...only practical xmas gifts, like pj's, socks and the like. i'm not trying to be a hum bug, but i'm really just trying to keep all the consumerism in check.
next year, they'll be begging for this doll, that laptop, and the other cellphone... what other time in their lives will a bow, a whisp of tissue paper, a box satisfy their every desire?... Never!! i would like to enjoy that level simplicity for just a little while. And....
THEY ARE ONE!!
i was talking to a friend who has a toddler. she said, as kids, her parents used to rewrap old toys, empty boxes...bricks even, and it was just all about the spirit.. the colors, the festivities and being together. they caught on eventually that the toys were last years', and that bricks weren't really fun to play with, but didn't it used to be simpler?
i am not saying the girls shouldn't have toys and material things.. because if you've been to my living room, you'll see that's not the case. they have tons to play with, and they love all their toys, but there is a point when the law of diminishing returns kicks in.. they can have all the toys in the world, but their enjoyment of them can only be so much.. and as bc3 would say, "everything else is flipus flopus."
i appreciate everything that the girls have gotten(they received tons of fun toys and generous gifts for their birthday) but i am also sensitive to the fact that people, including me, have a mortgage to pay, and gas to put in their cars. like i said, i'm not trying to be a hum bug, but i just wanted to put it out there... if you're thinking about what to buy the twins this year, don't run out to the mall- pick up the phone, call me, and we can spend the day together, have lunch, and bake cookies. it's not about quantity, it's about quality.. (my
motto for everything this year...)
i would just love for the girls to grow up thinking christmas is about family, and spending time with the people they care about.. not about an american girl doll, or video game.
after all, they are just ONE!! they don't NEED anything except to be fed, clothed, cleaned, and loved. and there certainly is no shortage of love in their lives.
